Unpacking the differences between TaxDome Payments and Stripe

TaxDome Payments is a new payment solution for tax, bookkeeping, and accounting firms of all sizes, from firms with 50+ team members to solo practices.

With Stripe as the infrastructure, TaxDome Payments builds on services trusted by millions of businesses worldwide and transforms it into a solution for the accounting profession’s most advanced payment needs. Imagine a truly frictionless payment experience for your clients and fully automated workflows where payment blockers disappear.

While TaxDome currently also includes a direct Stripe connection, we wanted to take this chance to unpack the key differences between TaxDome Payments and the Stripe integration in TaxDome.

TaxDome Payments vs. Stripe: quick comparison

Overall, Stripe is the infrastructure on which TaxDome Payments is built, but their independent purpose and function differ.

We built TaxDome Payments around Stripe’s underlying technology for good reason: it does the fundamentals very well for most businesses. The thing is, tax and accounting firms face more complex payment challenges than the average business.

This is why TaxDome Payments is needed.

StripeSimple, affordable payment solutions for everyday business
Built to simplify basic payment solutions for general business purposes — online payments, subscriptions, on-premise card payments, etc.
TaxDome PaymentsPurpose-built for tax, bookkeeping, and accounting firmsBuilds on Stripe’s underlying technology to address the unique challenges of payment processing for firms and their clients.

As good as Stripe is, using a third-party payment solution makes every invoice a potential blocker for firms. Emails get lost in inboxes, and late payments bring workflows to a halt. Clients get sick of logging in to multiple apps for each payment, and their frustration is reflected in your review scores.

What does TaxDome Payments do that Stripe can’t?

  • Send invoices directly to clients in the TaxDome app
  • Clients pay invoices in the TaxDome app; no new login or redirect
  • Automatic payment reminders
  • Migrate client payment methods when you switch to TaxDome Payments
  • Generate invoices at any workflow stage automatically
  • Set payment as a workflow dependency
  • Gate document delivery behind payment
  • Pass processing fees through to clients at checkout
  • Sync with QuickBooks Online for automatic reconciliation
  • Verify bank accounts instantly; no micro-deposits or added friction
  • Track payouts and cash flow inside TaxDome

The key difference is that TaxDome Payments is purpose-built for how scaling firms operate. It removes payment friction on both sides of the client relationship, fully automating billing within your workflows and making payments as convenient as possible for clients.

When your clients are always busy, there’s never a good time to complete multiple steps in a traditional payment system. Each step adds another reason for your invoices to stay on their to-do list. TaxDome Payments puts it on their “done” list by allowing clients to pay in the app and get back to business.

The clients of TaxDome firms can pay invoices on the go, hassle-free — no matter what else they’ve got going on.

TaxDome Payments is making it even easier for clients to pay firms in the TaxDome client app, already rated 4.9/5 by 38,000+ clients. Try the app for yourself to see why clients rate it so highly, or visit our TaxDome Payments page to learn more about how we’re changing the way clients pay their firms.

What does Stripe do well for tax and accounting firms?

Although Stripe was built with general business needs in mind, it still offers some fundamental strengths for tax and accounting firms:

  • Easy implementation: easy implementation options for all needs and skill levels — including no-code, low-code, and custom integrations
  • Simple approvals: as an aggregated Payment Service Provider (PSP), Stripe’s vetting and approval process is significantly faster than merchant account providers
  • Affordability: relative affordability to traditional payment solutions, especially for new and low-volume businesses
  • Flexibility: wide support for payment solutions and types, including cards, bank transfers, and digital wallets
  • Security: Stripe is one of the most secure, enterprise-grade payment processors, with PCI DSS Level 1 compliance

These are strong foundations for firms that need flexible, secure payment solutions. Stripe also lowered the entry barrier to payment processing for small businesses. A solo practitioner can set up Stripe in hours, without the lengthy vetting process of merchant account providers — or the higher transaction fees at low volumes.

Speaking of fees, here’s what you’re looking at if you sign up for Stripe today:

  • Credit card processing: 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction
  • ACH / bank transfers: 0.8%, capped at $5.00
  • No monthly platform fee

Now, if Stripe does the fundamentals so well, where could it possibly fall short for tax and accounting firms?

Where does Stripe fall short for firms?

Stripe was founded to simplify payment solutions for small businesses in the digital age, and it largely achieved this. It was never designed to solve the more intricate needs of tax and accounting firms, and this is where it can start to fall short:

  • Isolated payment management: Stripe doesn’t integrate with practice management software, isolating payments from client management, file sharing, and other core processes
  • Payment workflow gaps: firms have to manually review payments and start dependent workflows once invoices are paid
  • Email dependency for invoicing: although Stripe includes its own invoicing system, it’s reliant on email deliverability or its own isolated portal
  • Stripe-managed verification: identity verification and KYC are handled directly by Stripe, sometimes with unpredictable holds and fund freezes
  • ACH daily limits: Stripe places daily ACH limits on individual accounts, potentially blocking payments for high-volume firms
  • No fee pass-through: no option to pass processing costs to clients when using Stripe directly
  • Reconciliation issues: Stripe fees are deducted before deposits reach accounts, creating a mismatch between the invoice and the payment received
  • Separate team access: multi-user access requires independent configuration in Stripe, outside a firm’s existing permission structure
  • Standard support: ticket-based support with no dedicated account manager and no accommodation for accounting firm workflows or the timing pressures of tax season
  • Client impact: Stripe makes one-time payments convenient for general customers, but not so much for tax and accounting clients

These issues aren’t specific to Stripe; they’re intrinsic to payment solutions designed for general businesses. Firms will face the same limitations with any solution that isn’t designed specifically for tax and accounting practices.

What does TaxDome Payments do differently?

TaxDome Payments is a new payment solution, powered by Stripe’s infrastructure. You get the flexibility and security of Stripe, enhanced by an extensive platform built by our engineers to solve challenges unique to accounting firms.

Fully integrated payment solution

TaxDome Payments is fully integrated into the platform your team already uses to manage clients, documents, and workflows, without integrations that can break down and require to sign up for another platform. You can raise invoices automatically at any workflow stage, set payments as a dependency, and the next stage triggers as soon as the client pays.

The best part? Clients pay faster with fully automated workflows. Firms linking deliverable documents to invoices collect payment 2.5x sooner —
4.4 days on average, compared to 11 days for firms that do not.

Lock client documents to invoice payments in fully automated workflows with TaxDome Payments.

This turns your invoices from workflow blockers into enablers. A client pays their invoice, their document is released, and the job advances automatically. Your team doesn’t have to touch a thing.

A payment experience clients keep coming back for

With TaxDome Payments, your clients can pay invoices directly from the TaxDome client app — no new logins or redirects to third-party solutions.

75% of clients tell us they want one platform for all interactions with their accountants, and they’re used to bank-grade experiences from other finance apps. So, why should your client portal be any different?

Now, the same experience rated 4.9/5 stars by 38,000+ clients is making payments equally effortless for teams and clients.

The TaxDome app brings effortless payments to the experience rated 4.9/5 by 38,000+ clients.

This year, The TaxDome client app was named a 2026 Webby Award Honoree in Fintech, Financial Services & Banking, standing amongst top consumer brands like Apple, TurboTax, and HSBC.

As far as we’re concerned, your clients should get the same level of convenience and confidence from this app as their most trusted finance tools.

Pass transaction fees on to clients

TaxDome Payments gives you full control over who covers your transaction fees. You can pass payment processing fees directly to clients, with fees calculated automatically, based on the selected payment method. Clients see the fee at checkout, with full transparency, before they click the pay button.

Competitive rates with a meaningful ACH advantage

TaxDome Payments matches Stripe’s rates for card payments: 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction, with no monthly fee. ACH fees are 1% and capped at $10, which is in line with other payment solutions built for tax and accounting firms. For example, QuickBooks Payments also charges a 1% fee for ACH, but it has removed the $10 cap for all accounts created after September 2023. So, a $10,000 ACH payment that costs you $100 in QuickBooks Payments still only costs you $10 with TaxDome Payments.

Built-in payments reporting

TaxDome Payments brings payment reporting into TaxDome, so your team stops reconciling data across multiple systems. The new Payouts sub-tab in TaxDome Billing shows net payouts, gross amounts, processing fees, attributed invoices, and client names.

QuickBooks integration handles the reconciliation for you, and you can export your payout data from TaxDome as a CSV file for third-party reporting tools.

TaxDome Payments enhances TaxDome’s built-in payments and cash flow reporting.

TaxDome Payments is built for growing tax, bookkeeping, and accounting firms

With TaxDome Payments, you’re joining a payment solution purpose-built for your needs, and fully managed by TaxDome. Aside from the enhanced capabilities, this bypasses many of the limitations you’ll face when setting up an individual Stripe account for your firm:

  • Fully integrated with your workflows
  • Team access and permissions via TaxDome
  • No firm-level ACH daily or weekly caps
  • Guided setup and verification
  • TaxDome support
  • Escalated cases with Stripe, on your behalf
  • Negotiable rates for high-volume firms

Upcoming features (Summer 2026)

TaxDome Payments is already live, but we haven’t finished rolling out features to improve payments for firms and clients.

Here’s a quick preview of what you can expect to see throughout summer 2026:

  • Apple Pay and Google Pay — live now!
  • Granular card acceptance controls: enable or disable credit cards, debit cards, bank/ACH, and Amex
  • Manual bank entry (client-side): allow clients to enter bank info directly — live now!
  • Affirm (Buy Now Pay Later): flexible payment options and installment plans for clients, both online and on-premise — Summer 2026
  • In-person terminal (M2 reader / S710) for on-premise card payments — Summer 2026
  • Tap to pay via iPhone and iPad — Summer 2026

TaxDome Payments vs Stripe: fee comparison

TaxDome Payments gives you the same standard transaction fees as Stripe at 2.9% + $0.30 per credit card payment. Plus, TaxDome Payments offers negotiable rates for high-volume firms.

TaxDome PaymentsStripe

Yes, the ACH fees are slightly higher than Stripe’s, but consistent with other payment solutions for accounting firms. Also, keep in mind that Stripe sets daily ACH limits on individual accounts, while TaxDome Payments does not set daily or weekly limits on ACH transfers for firms.

We listened to firms’ Stripe concerns, and we’re addressing them

Firm feedback helps us make TaxDome the #1 tax practice management platform around the world. So, when firms told us they had concerns about Stripe powering TaxDome Payments, we listened.

Here’s what we’re doing to ensure TaxDome Payments is built with accounting firms’ unique needs in mind.

Stripe (Direct) — What firms experienceTaxDome Payments — How we solve it
⚠ Fund holds with no clear path to resolutionStripe freezes funds — sometimes for weeks — due to verification requirements, DBA mismatches, or risk flags. Firms often have no visibility into why, no timeline, and no direct support contact to escalate. One firm had $21k held with no resolution for over two weeks.✓ TaxDome manages the Stripe relationship on your behalfBecause TaxDome Payments is a managed product, our team can escalate directly to Stripe on your behalf. You are not navigating Stripe support alone. Verification issues are handled with your TaxDome account team, not a ticket queue.
⚠ ACH daily limits that don’t fit real firm volumesDirect Stripe accounts impose ACH processing limits at the account level — often set conservatively for new or unverified accounts. Firms with high ACH volume hit these limits without warning, blocking client payments mid-season.✓ No firm-level ACH daily or weekly capsTaxDome Payments operates at the platform level with a pooled ACH capacity that covers all firms. There are no firm-level daily or weekly ACH caps. A firm processing $500k in ACH during tax season will not be rate-limited mid-run.
⚠ Stripe customer support is slow, impersonal, and unhelpfulMultiple firms have described Stripe support as a ‘black hole’ — slow ticket responses, no phone support, generic answers, and agents unfamiliar with accounting firm workflows. When something breaks during tax season, waiting 48–72 hours for a reply is not acceptable.✓ Support through TaxDome — a team that knows your workflowWhen something goes wrong with TaxDome Payments, you contact TaxDome. The team understands tax firm workflows, knows the invoicing and payment product end-to-end, and can escalate to Stripe on your behalf when needed. You are not explaining what a 1099 is to a Stripe tier-1 agent.
⚠ Net payout model creates reconciliation nightmaresStripe pays out net — meaning fees are deducted before the deposit hits the bank. Firms using QuickBooks then have a mismatch: the invoice says $1,000, but $972 arrives. Manual journal entries, clearing accounts, and fee tracking become a monthly burden that firms weren’t told about before switching.✓ QuickBooks sync handles this automaticallyTaxDome Payments integrates with QuickBooks Online to automatically record gross payments, route the processing fee to a dedicated clearing account, and deposit the net to your bank account — all without manual entries. The sync eliminates reconciliation friction by design.
⚠ Stripe dashboard is confusing and separate from your workflowFirms must leave TaxDome, log into stripe.com, navigate between Transactions and Balance tabs, understand payout reconciliation reports, and cross-reference data manually. Several firms reported not being able to find their payouts, not knowing they were in sandbox/test mode, or not understanding why their Stripe and TaxDome numbers didn’t match.✓ Payout visibility inside TaxDome — no Stripe login requiredPayout reporting is moving into TaxDome directly (new Payouts sub-tab, payout CSV export). Firms will see gross, fees, net, and invoice attribution without opening Stripe. For firms who do want Stripe access, TaxDome helps onboard and navigate — it is not a solo task.
⚠ Multi-user Stripe access is not designed for teamsA firm with 3–4 staff needing to view payment status, download reports, or manage invoices all need separate Stripe access — which is not intuitive to set up and not how Stripe was designed to be used by a practice. One firm described it as ‘getting told to share a user ID’ before the real solution was found.✓ Team access managed through TaxDome’s existing user systemBecause TaxDome Payments lives inside TaxDome, every team member with appropriate TaxDome permissions can view payment status, invoice history, and payout data. No separate Stripe accounts, no access configuration. It works the same way your existing team access already works.
⚠ Stripe terminology and brand creates psychological resistanceMany accounting firms have heard negative things about Stripe — high-risk holds, poor support, complexity. When a client portal shows ‘Powered by Stripe,’ or when firms are told to ‘set up a Stripe account,’ it triggers hesitation before any conversation even starts.✓ TaxDome Payments — not StripeWhen your clients pay through TaxDome, they see TaxDome. When you manage payments, you do it inside TaxDome. The Stripe infrastructure runs in the background — invisible, doing its job. The product your clients and staff interact with is TaxDome Payments.
⚠ Verification and KYC friction blocks go-liveSetting up a direct Stripe account requires identity verification, business documentation, and bank verification. For firms that hit micro-deposit prompts, identity hold screens, or incomplete account flags, the process stalls — often during busy season when there is no time to troubleshoot.✓ TaxDome guides you through setup — including verificationTaxDome Payments onboarding includes guided setup assistance. If verification documents are needed, your TaxDome account team helps you understand what Stripe needs and why. Micro-deposit verification is being replaced with a toggle for manual bank entry — removing the most common psychological friction point.

Your payment system should improve the client experience. TaxDome Payments does.

We built TaxDome Payments because solutions designed for the average business don’t address the needs of firms or their clients. When every invoice is a potential workflow blocker, any unnecessary delay slows down service delivery. This is inefficient for firms, inconvenient for clients, and hits growth where it hurts the most: cash flow, retention, and firm reputation.

The worst part is that payment friction affects your most loyal clients as much as anyone. These are clients who would pay you at the push of a button if they could — and thank you for it. You can already see this in the latest reviews for the TaxDome client app, where clients are praising their firms for this new payment experience.

A client review praising the simplicity of paying through the TaxDome app.

With TaxDome Payments, you give every client the same first-class experience, and they’re thinking about how amazing your firm is when they leave these reviews. They’re rating your firm 5/5 stars and describing a payment experience that they would gladly recommend to others.

Make payments the easiest part of working with your firm, with TaxDome Payments.
