Webinar recap and Q&A: AI-powered business returns with TaxDome + Juno

Last week, tax and accounting professionals joined a live session on something firms have wanted for a while: business returns, prepared with AI, inside the same system they already use for everything else.

Ilya Radzinsky (Co-Founder & President, TaxDome), Dave Haase (Founder & CEO, Juno), and Jason Smith (Director, Fix My Books) walked a business return all the way through, client documents in, a review-ready return out, with Juno’s AI handling the prep in the middle.

Questions came in fast, right through to the end. If you missed it, want to watch it again, or want to send it to your team, the full recording is here.

Here’s what we covered

For a while now, the TaxDome + Juno integration has been quietly working at scale on individual returns. This season, firms completed more than 300,000 intake checklists in TaxDome, sent more than 100,000 documents straight to Juno through the integration, and delivered more than 120,000 returns back to clients. More than 88% of those documents came through with zero manual entry.

That was all 1040s. The reason for this session was the next step: Juno now prepares business returns too, covering 1120, 1120-S, and 1065 forms. So a firm can run its whole client base, personal and business, through one flow.

The thing to understand is that a business return is not a bigger 1040. As Dave put it in the session:

The challenge with business returns is very different than individual returns. It’s about reconciling the system. The time is actually making adjustments, putting it on the work paper, making sure the right number is in the tax software.

That’s the part Juno takes on. It reads the P&L and balance sheet, builds the workpaper, proposes the journal entries, and flags what needs a human eye before anything reaches your tax software: missing officer compensation on an S-corp, significant distributions, a Schedule L that won’t balance, a blank 7203.

The workflow, start to finish

  1. Collect the business documents in TaxDome.
  2. Send them to Juno through the native integration, routed to the right entity.
  3. Juno prepares the return, builds the workpaper, and pushes the data into your tax software.
  4. Deliver the finished return back to the client in TaxDome.

The time it gives back

Jason runs this exact workflow at his firm. On what it did to his prep time:

It’s reduced the time at least 50%. Before, it was all manual. QuickBooks is separate, TaxDome is separate, the tax software is separate, and you’re tabbing between them. Now it’s actually super easy.

Dave’s own firm, two seasons in, has seen the same curve go further:

We saw 50% the first year. We’re getting closer to 65 to 70 now.

How firms are using that time

The hours firms get back are the real story here. That saved time goes somewhere useful. Here’s how Jason thinks about it:

If you spend 5 hours on a tax return during a season, and you reduce that to two and a half, then you have two and a half other hours to do something else for that client that actually brings in value.

That’s the shift from churning out returns to advising on them. And it’s what keeps clients with you. As Jason put it:

It makes the client a lot more sticky. If all you’re doing is selling the service of a tax return, you’re going to struggle competing with everyone else who can also sell the service of a tax return.

Dave, who sold his own firm earlier this year, tied it to where the profession is heading:

What protects our businesses from people doing their taxes in something like Perplexity is two things: the assurance that a trained professional looked at the return, and the advice you give around it. Assurance and advisory work are going to be the core of our profession.

Automating the prep is what frees firms to spend their time there.

Q&A

Workflow and pipelines

How does the TaxDome and Juno workflow fit together, and how much time does it save?

TaxDome is your intake and client-facing platform, while Juno is the tax workflow tool working in tandem with your tax software. You collect client documents in TaxDome and when ready, Send to Juno (or Send to tax software) directly from the client’s Documents section or the document checklist. Juno extracts the data, generates the workpaper, and runs an automated review. You review and approve the draft, then Juno pushes the data directly into your tax software, ProConnect, Drake, Lacerte, or UltraTax, for final preparation and filing. From your tax software, print directly to TaxDome to deliver the tax return. See Tax return intake and delivery explained for the complete walkthrough.

The biggest time saving comes from that automated data entry, the manual keying of client figures that your team otherwise does by hand. Firms using the integration report cutting preparation time by around half, with the gains growing on repeat clients as the system carries prior-year context forward.

This is a proven workflow, not a new experiment: on individual returns, more than 300,000 checklists were completed by clients of firms using TaxDome, and more than 100,000 documents were sent from TaxDome to Juno last tax season through the native integration, more than 88% of them arrived needing zero manual input before processing. And the new tax return delivery function from TaxDome was utilized more than 120,000 times through TaxDome over that period. Business returns are the newest addition, extending that same workflow to 1120, 1120S, and 1065 filings.

How does the Reviewer, Binder, and workpaper process work?

Once Juno validates the extracted P&L and balance sheet, it produces an Excel workpaper and a bookmarked PDF binder. When you upload a completed draft return back into Reviewer, Juno updates the workpapers automatically and surfaces call-outs relevant to your review, so the preparer does not have to rebuild the binder by hand.

Juno flags things a preparer can easily overlook on an entity return: missing officer compensation on an S-Corp, significant distributions with no shareholder salary, a Schedule L that will not balance, negative liability accounts, or a blank Form 7203. If you map several line items into one category such as other expenses, the export keeps each item listed individually so you retain that detail.

Will Juno pull the P&L and balance sheet from QuickBooks Online or Xero?

Yes. You can connect your QuickBooks Online or Xero account inside Juno, select the client, confirm the year start and end in case of a fiscal year, and Juno pulls the P&L and balance sheet automatically. It remembers that client mapping for next time. The same works for QuickBooks Online documents already flowing into TaxDome, which you send to Juno the same way you would for a 1040.

On QB Ledger and lesser subscriptions: if the financials are accessible in the QuickBooks Online environment, the integration can generally pull them. If something is not accessible there, the fallback is to download the P&L and balance sheet and upload them to Juno directly. Juno accepts Excel, CSV, or PDF for these.

Does Juno post journal entries back into QuickBooks?

No. Juno lets you export the journal entries, but it does not push them back into QuickBooks Online or Xero. This is a deliberate control so a human stays in the loop on what gets posted, rather than having entries written back automatically. Juno may add write-back as an option later, but it is not the current behavior.

If I get more documents after sending to Juno, does re-exporting cause problems?

No. Re-exporting does not duplicate what you already sent. You choose which documents export and when, and you can skip anything exported previously, which suits firms that prepare the return as documents arrive.

How does Juno know how to categorize P&L and balance sheet accounts?

Juno auto-categorizes the accounts on the first pass, and you can adjust any category during validation. Support for classes and sub-accounts is being added. Year two of using Juno leverages what you did the prior year, so the mapping carries forward and saves more time on repeat clients rather than being redone annually.

Coverage: forms, entities, and accuracy

Which returns and forms does Juno prepare?

Juno supports 1040 individual returns plus 1120, 1120S, and 1065 business returns. For business returns, the inputs are the P&L and balance sheet, from which Juno builds the workpaper, creates the journal entries, and pushes the information into your tax software. It also handles non-standard inputs including Schedule C, E, and F schedules in Excel, CSV, or PDF, and handwritten notes from clients.

Juno is not a tax software and does not e-file. It automates the data entry and review so you are not manually keying figures into your tax software, then hands the return to that software to finish and file.

What is not yet supported on business returns: fixed asset capitalization and the depreciation method selection are still done by you in the tax software. Multi-entity returns and Form 8825 real estate reporting are on the roadmap, expected before next tax season. Form 1041 has not been announced.

How accurate is Juno’s data extraction?

Accuracy on core forms such as W-2s and 1099s is in the high 99s. State K-1s are the hardest case and sit in the mid-90s depending on the state. Juno uses multiple AI agents plus logic checks between related figures on a form, for example that Box 1 on a W-2 is a predictable multiple of the withholdings. When confidence is low or the agents disagree, it stops and asks you to confirm the value rather than guessing. On a 1040 it completes roughly 95% of fields and tells you what it did not do, leaving you the exceptional items that need professional judgment.

Every extracted figure is traceable back to its source. When Juno flags a value for you to confirm, it jumps straight to that spot on the source document so your staff can validate the entry against the original in one step, instead of hunting through a long PDF. This source-to-return visibility is the point: you can see where each number came from rather than trusting a black box.

What does Juno prepare on a 1040?

On individual returns Juno extracts the core IRS documents and supports around 100 form types, including 1099s, brokerage statements, and K-1s at both the federal and state level. It also pulls organizer items such as charitable and non-cash contributions and mortgage interest that flow into Schedule A. It does not read everything off K-1 footnotes, but it flags anything in the footnotes it thinks needs attention. As with business returns, it completes about 95% of fields and tells you what it left for you.

Does Juno include tax planning and advisory tools?

Advisor is Juno’s planning and analysis tool, included at no extra cost in a Juno subscription. It has full client context and shows each step of its calculations so you can verify them. Firms use it for scenario work such as evaluating an S-Corp election, explaining year-over-year or projection-to-final changes to a client, and reviewing a finished return for missed planning opportunities. Advisor works with business returns and partnerships today.

Pricing and subscription

How much does Juno cost?

Juno is a separate product with its own subscription in addition to your TaxDome plan, priced per return with volume-based rates. For current pricing, see the Juno pricing page. As the only Juno preferred partner, TaxDome customers will always get the best rate. If you are already a TaxDome customer, reach out to your customer success manager to make sure you get the best rate.

Integrations

Which tax software does Juno work with?

Juno integrates with ProConnect, Drake, Lacerte, UltraTax, and CCH Axcess, with more on the way. ProSeries support is expected before the 2026 tax season. If your tax software is not yet supported, the integration will not push into it, so confirm your platform is covered before you start.

How does Juno work with desktop tax software or a virtual desktop?

Juno uses a desktop app to enable its integrations with desktop-based tax software such as Drake or UltraTax. If you run a hosted or virtual desktop, the app just needs to be installed there. One current limitation is UltraTax on the Thomson Reuters Virtual Office environment, which is not supported. For ProConnect, the export currently uses a browser agent and requires you to log in with two-factor, but this is moving to an API structure within roughly the next month or two, which will let it run in the background without the desktop app.

Will Juno support UltraTax after Source Data Entry is discontinued?

Juno is actively working on a solution to support UltraTax’s move away from Source Data Entry. Export times give a sense of current performance: ProConnect usually takes one to two minutes, while Drake, UltraTax, and CCH Axcess are faster, in the range of 30 seconds to a minute.

Security and data handling

How is client data protected, and are the AI models trained on it?

No, your data is not used to train the AI models. Juno maintains a zero data retention agreement with its AI model providers, and personally identifiable information such as names and Social Security numbers is not sent to those external systems. For the full picture, see Juno’s trust and security page and TaxDome account security.

Where this leaves your firm

Business returns were the hard part to automate, and now they run through the same system as everything else.

Faster prep is only the start of it. The bigger gain is what those recovered hours go toward. The firms that come out ahead are the ones that take the time back and put it into advice, planning, and the client relationships no consumer tax app can replace.

That shift is available now, on your own returns, for the whole client base you already serve.
